Essential Things to Know Before Visiting Bhutan
Travel Smart, Experience More
Bhutan isn’t your typical tourist destination and that’s exactly what makes it so special. Before you travel to this peaceful Himalayan kingdom, it’s important to understand a few key things that will make your journey smoother, safer, and more meaningful.
At Allways Tours and Travels, we help travelers prepare every detail in advance so you can enjoy a seamless and stress-free experience.
Here are 15 essential things to know before visiting Bhutan in 2025, based on real travel insights and local expertise.
1. You Need a Visa or Entry Permit
Foreign nationals require a Bhutan visa, which must be arranged in advance.
Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian citizens need an entry permit instead of a visa.
2. SDF Is Mandatory
All travelers must pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF):
- Rs. 1,200 per person per night for Indian citizens
- USD $100 per person per night for international travelers
This fee is included in your tour package and supports Bhutan’s healthcare, education, and environmental conservation.
3. Independent Travel Is Not Allowed
Travel must be booked through a licensed Bhutan tour operator. Independent travel without a fixed itinerary and permits is not permitted.
4. You Can Enter by Air or Road
You can fly into Paro from Delhi, Kolkata, or Bagdogra, or enter by road via Phuentsholing, Gelephu, or Samdrup Jongkhar.
5. No Self-Driving
Tourists are not allowed to drive private or rental vehicles inside Bhutan. A Bhutan registered vehicle with a local driver is required and included in your tour package.
6. Cash is Preferred
ATMs may not always work with international cards. Carry enough Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) or Indian Rupees, as both are widely accepted. Card payments are available in select hotels and shops.
7. Tobacco Is Restricted
Tobacco import is allowed in limited quantities but is heavily taxed at entry. Smoking is prohibited in public places.
8. Internet Access is Limited in Remote Areas
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and cafes, but speeds may be slow in remote regions. Local SIM cards (TashiCell or B-Mobile) can be purchased with valid ID and permits.
9. Pack for Changing Weather
Weather conditions can vary, even in summer. Carry layered clothing, a light jacket, and comfortable walking shoes for different climates.
10. Respect Cultural Norms
Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and dzongs. Avoid sleeveless clothing and shorts, remove shoes before entering, and respect local traditions and customs.
11. Photography Has Restrictions
Photography is not allowed inside temples or during certain rituals. Always ask your guide or locals before taking photos of people or sacred sites.
12. Be Prepared for Altitude
Destinations like Thimphu and Paro are located above 2,000 meters. Take time to acclimatize, stay hydrated, and avoid overexertion upon arrival.
13. Try Traditional Hot Stone Baths
A unique Bhutanese wellness experience using heated river stones and medicinal herbs. It is highly recommended and can be arranged through your tour operator.
14. Bhutan Is Extremely Safe
Bhutan is one of the safest travel destinations, with very low crime rates. Locals are friendly and respectful, but basic travel precautions are always advised.
15. Bhutan Runs on a Relaxed Pace
Life in Bhutan moves slowly and peacefully. Expect calm service, quiet surroundings, and a refreshing break from the fast paced world.
