After a hearty breakfast, depart for Punakha — the former capital of Bhutan, approximately 73 km (around 3 hours) from Thimphu. En route, cross the spectacular Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,170 ft), adorned with 108 memorial chortens and offering breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas on clear days.
Punakha, situated at an altitude of 1,300 m / 4,265 ft and blessed with a warm subtropical climate, is nourished by the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River).
Key sightseeing stops include:
- Punakha Dzong (‘Palace of Great Happiness’) – Built in the 17th century, this magnificent fortress is the winter residence of Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and over 1,000 monks
- Punakha Suspension Bridge – One of Bhutan’s oldest and most scenic suspension bridges, draped in prayer flags and stretching over the Pho Chhu River
- Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility) – A revered 15th-century pilgrimage site built by the famous Buddhist master Drukpa Kunley

DAY 3: Punakha to Paro Sightseeing (13th May)
This morning, make your way back to Paro — one of Bhutan’s most picturesque valleys, home to historic dzongs, ancient monasteries, and lush terraced farmlands.
Paro sightseeing highlights:
- Rinpung Dzong – Built in 1646 by the unifier of Bhutan, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this perfectly symmetrical fortress-monastery is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture
- Ta Dzong (National Museum of Bhutan) – A hilltop watchtower converted into a museum housing Bhutanese art, artefacts, and postal history
- Drugyel Dzong (Ruins of the Victorious Fortress) – Located 18 km north of Paro town, this historic ruin stands as a testament to Bhutanese courage in repelling 17th-century Tibetan invasions
Overnight stay in Paro.
